PRopellers for Electric Air Mobility Applications

The Rhine-Meuse region faces a critical challenge to remain competitive within the rapidly emerging electric and urban air mobility (UAM) sector. New markets for drones, air taxis, and VTOL aircrafts might grow exponentially, with forecasts exceeding 1.4 million propeller blades needed by 2035.

Propellers are highly loaded structures requiring advanced carbon-composites for strength, stiffness, and efficiency. Today, however, European manufacturers rely on manual hand lay-up or braiding methods, which are labour-intensive, costly, and too slow to meet the scale-up needed.

The PREAMA project aims to automate the manufacturing process for carbon-composite propellers and demonstrate a scalable, cost-efficient, and efficient production line. The expected change is a competitive, high-throughput composite manufacturing platform that enables European SMEs to serve fast-growing UAM markets.
