Automatic and more efficient Robotic Welding for copper battery packs - RoboWeld-Batt

The goal of the project is to develop an innovative, robot-assisted high-speed welding system for series production of battery cells with copper connectors. Copper offers excellent electrical properties but is difficult to weld. By integrating intelligent control software and semiconductor-grade motion systems, we aim to increase welding speed by a factor of 10 without compromising quality. aixcon PowerSystems and Vectioneer jointly develop a scalable, cost-efficient solution that addresses the needs of battery manufacturers, e-mobility and energy storage providers, and research institutions—contributing to a more competitive and sustainable European battery production industry.

Update on December 12, 2025:

Vectioneer programmed and tested the linear axis and the HMI. The current setup is a prototype used to analyze optimal parameters and will be upgraded with more robust, industrial-grade components. Although the system is still running at reduced speed, a faster axis version will enable a higher throughput without major design changes.

aixcon redeveloped the power stage and a new high-frequency ignition to improve efficiency and welding quality. A compact cabinet layout and a new torch further reduce space and energy consumption. Dry tests are successful; final assembly and testing remain.

The RoboWeldBatt-project is now ahead of schedule: A meeting with a potential customer led to a defined specification addressing customer requirements as well as the communication and development interface between aixcon and Vesctioneer. It is expected, that the project  will be finished completely and successfully until the planned end date.
