TRANSIT: Easier cross-border public transport in the Meuse-Rhine Region
Taking public transport to cross borders in the Meuse-Rhine region should be simple, but it's not. Taking the car to move from one country to another is easy, but passengers who take the bus or train can feel overwhelmed as they need to figure out different ticketing systems and booking tools. Cross-border journeys are part of everyday life in our region, but using public transport often feels unnecessarily complicated. The project TRANSIT is here to address these challenges with a strong partner network.
Transport authorities, regional planners and academic experts from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany cooperate in this project to work hand in hand to make cross-border public transport more connected and easier to use for everyone. This includes people who commute to work or school, travel, or just visit friends or family.
TRANSIT builds on past successes with new tools and fresh ideas. For example, the project is developing smart technologies like voice-controlled travel information powered by artificial intelligence. It is also studying how employers can support staff who travel across borders every day, and how better cooperation between local governments can improve services in the long run.
One of the project’s goals is to reactivate old railway lines and explore new connections. That could create fresh opportunities for the region by improving access to jobs, offering cleaner travel options, and strengthening ties between communities. A particular focus for commuter mobility is the Avantis business park where experts are investigating how to improve accessibility by public transport.
Without this project, regions might continue to work separately. TRANSIT supports long-term cooperation, making mobility a model for stronger cross-border governance in the Meuse-Rhine region.
