Working together towards a strong Meuse-Rhine hydrogen region
The Meuse-Rhine region, which covers parts of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, wants to accelerate the transition to hydrogen. However, there are still some significant challenges. There is no joint planning for the construction of pipelines, filling stations and other infrastructure.
Companies are also not yet collaborating enough to bundle their hydrogen demand, and the quality of hydrogen is not the same everywhere, especially across national borders. As a result, development is slow and investors are uncertain.
To solve this, parties from the three countries are launching a joint project. Together, they will make plans for the construction of hydrogen networks and the bundling of demand. Agreements will also be made on the quality of hydrogen, so that it is reliable everywhere. This will be done with the help of modern measuring equipment, a mobile laboratory and a central database containing all the important data.
The aim is to create a strong, cross- border hydrogen region that is in line with European plans. This will make it easier for companies to invest and give the region an important role in the European hydrogen economy. The project focuses on industry, transport, inland shipping, energy companies, SMEs and governments.
If we do not work together, each country will continue to follow its own path and we will lose opportunities for both the economy and sustainability.
