In July 2021, the Euregio Meuse-Rhine was hit by very heavy rainfall. This caused major flooding in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, resulting in significant damage and suffering for many people. According to the IPCC, such floods may happen more often in the future because of climate change. That is why good cooperation is important. Governments, water boards, knowledge institutes, nature organizations, interest groups, and residents must work together on this issue.
The Flood Wisdom project helps to be better prepared for floods. Eleven partners from the three countries are working together in this project. They have already gained experience working together in the EMFloodResilience project in 2022 and 2023. Flood Wisdom aims to improve our ability to predict floods. New systems and models are being developed so that people can respond faster to risks. Solutions are also being created to reduce the damage from water. For example, an early warning system for flash floods will be further developed.
This project is important for the region. It has a budget of over eight million euros, with 650,000 euros set aside for management and communication. Flood Wisdom has three main parts: better data and measuring equipment, tackling obstacles in the water, and understanding water flows and nature in the future.
